700r4 Car won't go - what are my options ( a little long)

I bought a 1984 z-28 about a year ago. It seemed to have a little trouble going backwards otherwise I had no problems driving it home. I parked it as I worked on the interior. We would start it from time to time. Now it goes forward only when the engine is not warm and if you "play with it".

(It doesn't go backwards hardly at all)

The fluid level and color is ok
THe outside linkage looks ok.

I am about to drop the pan.

What are the things that might be wrong that can be discovered and repaired without removing the transmission.

What are the problems that indicate rebuild (or new tranny?). Are there positive tests to make this determination.

I do have both a shop manuual for 83 camaro (84 should be similar) and a haynes THD tranmsission manual. I am trying sort out what I have to do before I drop the pan.

Any help experienced people could give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You
