speedo drive gear missing?

hi, I have an 89 camaro w/ a T5 and have had some trouble w/ the speedo since owning the car. I put a new speedo cable in because the old one was pretty much destroyed, but that didn't fix it. I reached my finger into the housing to feel if the drive gear was locked up or not, but its simply not there. Is this a common occurance? I know I have to remove the tailshaft to get to it, but what could have broke to make this happen? how much do these cost and are they very easy to install? any input would be appriciated.
thank you

Never heard of that happening under normal driving circumstances. Not costly. More difficult to install. Check the following link (which is also a sticky):

Re: speedo drive gear missing?

Before I swapped my T56 in I had two speedometer cables break with my T5. Was the bottom cables both times that broke, and both were caused by a bad upper cable. I didn't realize this was what was happening the first time unfortunately. The last time the cable seized up and locked the driven gear from turning. The gears work like a thread on a bolt. You stop the driven gear and the drive gear just threaded itself forward on the output shaft since there is only a little clip holding it in place. Had to pull the trans to get the gear back in place. Was a real pain just to fix my speedometer. I replaced my two part cable with a new 1 piece unit from a parts store. Works great and cost about $12 as I recall.

This may be what happened to you. Unfortunately you will have to get the tail housing off to see what's going on in there. Good luck.

that sounds like it might be what happened. my speedo cable is the same length as stock, but its 1 piece. I KNOW its seated on the speedo guage right so I was wondering why it wasn't working. I took off the driven gear on the tranny to see if I could get it in farther thinking its just not in far enough. thats when I came across this.
I think I'm gonna take the tail shaft off today. I'll post pics if I do.

thanks for the link, its really helping a lot.
got everything taken apart, my speedo drive gear was in place and doesn't look torn up at all! I'm going to look more at the fitment of the speedo gears. anyone have an idea why this thing is doing this to me?
