my shifter?

this really hasnt anything to do w/ my tranny, but the camaro shifter is straight right? i want to cut it down and put a metal ball on it. i really dont want to take the booty off and cut it down at the bottom so can i jusy hack it off at top and pop on a ****?? if so, how do i get the one off there cuz i canst seem to get it off, i tried going counter clockwise....

I'm assuming you mean a T-5 shifter. The stick is hollow with a thread at the top. Earlier ones were threaded on to the lower part (1983) but later ones (1985) were pressed on. You would have to lift the console and boot to see which one you have. You can unscrew the early one, but would have to take the 4 bolts out out and take the whole shifter off if it's a later one. If you just want to make it shorter, you could cut it off and put a new thread on it. But to really do it right, just replace it with a Ripper.

My 85 IROC is a threaded, screw-on type.
