Automatic Transmission in lock mode
I have an 1982 Carmaro and just put in a 350 chevy engine in it. I drove it yesturday for about 6 miles and went to take it out this morning and found that it wont drive forward or in reverse....It sesms to be locked into a neutral position. When I move the stick into Park I get a loud grinding sound. Can you give me any suggestions on what may be going on. Just need to trouble shot and get resolved soon.
Thank you,
Henry

Re: Automatic Transmission in lock mode
Fluid is full just checked this morning. Right now tried to put in drive and only making a weird sound not moving. Went shift back into park and made a grinding sound (like shift gears wrong). Right now I have it in park and can roll still.

Does your speedometer read anything while it's in drive?

What about since you've been having this problem? Is the speedometer moving at all?

Re: Automatic Transmission in lock mode
With car in drive and E-brake set, look under to see if drive
-shaft is turning(sounds like it is since it grinds when put
into park)-if shaft is turning and wheels aren't,spider gears
have broken or fallen out

Here's what I have looked into. I put the car rear tires up and they are spinning when car is supposed to be in park. The driveshaft is diffently working, but shift to move forward or in reverse still doesn't. Cable seems to be intacted also.Got any idea's.

Try this: Jack up 1 rear wheel, leave the other wheel on
the ground-with car in park try to turn the wheel that is
off the ground while observing the driveshaft if wheel can
be turned and driveshaft does not turn there is a spider
gear problem and your axle will need repair.

Re: Automatic Transmission in lock mode
everyone seems to be overlooking the obvious. the engine install. the torque converter probably came out a little and during the engine install when the trans was bolted to the engine it probably broke the pump gears. to check that just pull the plug on the side of the transmission near the shifter(line pressure port) and start the car up. if oil shoots out that is good. if not the pump gears got stacked during install and broke them meaning the trans needs the pump pulled and replaced or repaired. this port will shoot oil out in all ranges regardless as long as the pump works.
