Wondering what transmission would be better to swap into my car i have an automatic 86 trans am tpi. And i would was wondering what i would need to completely swap and ruffly how much it would cost

 

man, this has been covered so many times it's not even funny.

the strongest t-5's are only rated for 300 ft lbs. most of them are grenades.
fourth gen t56's are good to 450. get the lt1 version if you can. life is better when your bellhousing bolts to your engine.

you're going to need the trans, (i hope you're with me so far at least...) clutch and brake pedals, clutch master and slave cylinders, clutch fork, shifter, clutch...all that good stuff that goes along with a tranny. if you're going t5, the stock crossmember can be made to work, though it prefers the raised member. just get a polyurethane mount and you'll be fine. if t56, you'll need to either fab or buy a crossmember. the stock shifter plate in your console will either need to be replaced or modified. the slip yoke on your driveshaft from the 700r4 will work with a t5 and the driveshaft is the same length. a t56 will need to be cobbled together one way or another.

the 56 is more expensive to get ahold of, though they can be bought for less than a grand. it's cheaper in the long run to get the better trans now.
