Stock rear end for 91 rs?

I wanted to install a mini-spool in the stock rear end to get a rear locker cost effectively but I'm not sure if the stock rear end is the 10 bolt or the 12 bolt, can anyone tell me which one it is? Or better yet...how I can tell myself? I'm guessing that it is just the count of bolts on the perimeter of the diff cover...yes/no?

thanks guys

Re: Stock rear end for 91 rs?

if you have a stock 3rd gen you definately have a 10bolt rear end no question about that...
i would NOT suggest a mini spool for a driver car without stronger axles and c-clip eliminators...why not try finding a LSD unit from someone?
----------
do you know what gear ratio you have?
2.76
3.08
3.23
3.42

Stock rear with 700R4 auto would be open 2:73 ratio.

Re: Stock rear end for 91 rs?

At slow speeds with a mini-spool turning you will spend more in tires due to them being chewed up because the inside tire cant slow down during cornering. Eventually you may end up snapping axles or braking the carrier in the rear end. You can buy rebuilt lockers on ebay from Dans gear for $199 to $250. That would be cheaper than $90 a tire or $200+ for axles after yours are junk.... Mini spools are designed for dirt track applications where the inside tire can spin, they are not even designed fro drag racing...

Your 91 will have a 7.5/7.625 10 bolt with 28 spline axles.

As mentioned above, you're better off buying a good posi or locker.

Re: Stock rear end for 91 rs?

Thank you for all the comments everyone. The only reason I had thought of that was because they were only $40, but I did forget a couple of those things.

By open 2.73, did you mean a standard, non-limited slip rear end? I'd really rather get a posi rear end for this thing, but I just don't have the money to throw at it with my son just being born a few days ago. My main priority is to get a carburetor on it first anyways. Soon as it get one I can start work on a fuel change project I've had planned for a long time, in fact this car was purchased for that sole purpose. I'm aimin to get the Thunder Series 650CFM unless someone can think of one cheaper for the same adjustability, and simplicity.

Thanks again everyone.

i will tell you, i went from a 2.73 open to a 3.23 LSD, first off twin tire fire and no chirping around turns kicks, second off the 3.23 light the car up, and you can still drive at 75 MPH at a good RPM. i would say its worth the money to get a LSD a better set of gears......just make sure its put together right, i going around and around tring to get mine right with the guy who put it together.....the gears are whining now

Re: Stock rear end for 91 rs?

I would think a 650cfm may be alittle more carb than you need. I am running a 600cfm and had to rejet it due to running a little rich. I would try to stay with a Holley. (Edelbreaks suck IMOP) If it will be street only the way to go would be vacuum secondaries so the 305 dont bog on hard accel from a dead stop IMOP.
