I have a 84 rebuilt tci 700r4 transmission going in my 91 z28 vert which has a 305 , anyway my car has an electric speedo right? so can some one tell me how to switch the tail pieces on the transmissions? Any help or advice appreciated. Thanks

 

You don't have to switch the tails just the speedo gears.

 

How exactly do I switch the gears? Please help not getting the procedure.

Remove the speed sensor on the one transmission and put it in the other.

The tail shaft extension on the rear of the tranny should unbolt from the main trans . Pull it off . There will be a large colored plastic gear shoved on it. Pull the gear towards the rear and pull it off . Push on the correct gear/tooth ring for your speedo . Make sure it is seated properly . Replace tail shaft . Hook yoke and driveshaft back up. Check wiring connectors and fluid. Plug sensor and bolt back into place on outside once tranny is back into car. Assuming the tranny is already pulled or hanging with crossmember off....put it all back up and bolt it all back into place , etc. If you have no idea , get a mechanic friend to help. If you are adventurous , this will be easy , but I have to assume that you have already gotten the tranny on the floor or jack and not installed yet . If installed , you'll need to disconnect the driveshaft/yoke and crossmember support , speed sensor, lines , raise hood or remove aircleaner so you don't bend it all up when it all tilts down , etc. I'm guessing that you know all this stuff , but only needed to know where the speed sensor ring gear is located on the '84 700r4 and how to R&R the one part.

 

I was assuming that you were just replacing the speed sensor ring gear...I re-read and see that you are trying to put an older 700r4 into a newer model...oops ...I can only say how to change out the gear....I can think that you could just change the tailshafts from each tranny to get the right hookups for the newer electronics on , but can not for sure tell you if that is a do-able thing . I have the weaker old '84 700r4 IN a '84 (plus your's is built)....so I have not tried to swap this tranny into a newer type electronic set up. Good luck and I hope it is as simple as swapping the tailshaft ends with the correct hookups, but do not know this as fact . Call around and ask some race car builders in your area an see what they do?
