a big chattering when i start off and shift

ok. i have an 82 T/A(mods in my sig) and when i take off and when it shifts there is a big chatter coming from the drivetrain, and it shakes the whole car, and it also slips ALOT. i mean i give it gas and it dont go, well it goes alittle bit. if i were to give it 1/4 gas it takes along time to get to 35mph .It just started a couple days ago. i have a posi 3.23 rear. the car has 151k miles on it. you think maybe its the rear end or posi unit. Thanks

The transmission is either low on fluid or its on its way out!

Try putting it in Man 1 and taking off. If the chatter goes away that 1500 mile tranny is toast. Check the vaccum at the modulator. It should @18" and when you snap the throttle it must move IMMEDIATELY. It should move as if there is a string attached to the needle from the gas peddle. If it doesn't, pressure rise will be delayed and the trans will have a short life. The good news is that if you liked how it worked at first then you know who to go to to buy another one.

push the car around in neutral, see if it chatters. (make sure the car is off the first time, then again with it on) obviouselly if the car is off and its chattering its the rear end. those units are somtimes retarded, and need oil changes just like you engine. (about once ever 75K miles is good however) your rear could definetelly be shot.

when i force it in 1st it still vibrates when i take off from a stop. and it seems like the torque converter is slipping ALOT. i think the torque converter could be the problem.

i took the rear cover off the rear end and it looks fine. but that wont tell me anything.

my boss is a mechanic and hes going to look at it soon

Thanks guys

Well of course it doesn't go fast when you give it 1/4 throttle. You have a 2600 rpm stall with 3.23 gears. As for the chatter, tell your passenger to shut up!!! ( a little humor)

Rear ends make a LOT of noise when they break. But they make noise at all rpm when you break a ring gear. If you power-break the car, what happens?? Is your stall speed the same??
If it chatters then its your trans. Have you checked all mounts and flexplate bolts???

What were you doing when the trouble started?

High stall, low gears = heat (and lots of it)
Look at the converter, if the paint is burned off, everything is toast. I hope you have a trans cooler on that thing.

You don't have a bad brake shoe, or maybe left the parking break on?? (just kidding)

Hope this helps.

it doesnt make any noise. so it must not be the rear end.

i took the driveshaft off and the joints were very very loose. i mean you lift up the thing that goes into the tranny and it drops. you think that that could do all that vibration. and i do have a tranny cooler on it. and the paint is still on the converter

and if i gave it 1/4 gas before this started it would get up to speed. but now it seems like it dont want to go.

since i thought the joints on the driveshaft were too loose i brang it to All parts to have the driveshaft rebuilt and balanced.

Thanks for all your help..
