Can't do the T-5 shuffle
Can't do the T-5 shuffle
I have an '86 Z28 with a 305/T-5 and 86,000 miles. I've only had the car for 2 years and only put 10,000 miles on it. When I try leaving the line fast in my car, the engine revs really high and the car seems like its going slow in relation to how much gas I'm giving it(I hold the revs to about 2000 and dump it while hitting full throttle). It used to squeal the tires a little then hook right up. I'm pretty sure this is due to clutch problems, but when powershifting into second, its really hard to get into gear. Sometimes it doesn't and I miss the shift. Rarely, I'll actually make it into second gear while powershifting, but it'll make a quick grinding noise and the engine revs high as I've said at the beginning of this post. When driving normally around town, I've also noticed second gear harder to get into than the rest. In order to get into reverse without grinding, I have to quickly put it into fourth before reverse. Sometimes when I push the clutch pedal down, I hear a knock coming from the transmission. I'm already planning on investing in a new clutch, but is there something else wrong with my tranny? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

well dumping the clutch at 2 grand probably isn't gonna help it much... nor will power shifting...
just a thought here but maybe you tore the teeth off of your gears... other problems could be throwout bearing is shot, clutch fork is shot, or the clutch itself is shot...
worse case scenario you screwed your flywheel up as well as the above

clutch forks are notorious for getting bent on these cars. get a heavy duty one from jegs or summit for $25. could be the clutch, too from you hard usage. also try bleedin the slave cylinder but i am being optimistic now. getting down to the extreme maybe bad shift fork inside the tranny or synco. everything demon said pretty much you should look for. cant say i am picturing the throwout bearing having much to with it, though. good luck
IT could be a ton of things actually. Don't powershift a T-5 for sure...the dumps are alright once in a while, but I shelled out my Countergear doing a 3000rpm dump, but I have quit a bit of HP too. Just the coutergear for those tranny's are EXPENSIVE...unless you find a used one might as well get a new tranny if thats the problem. T-5's will last a while, but are not good to powershift with for sure. You could have bad synchros, bent fork, worn or broken gears, bad pressure plate or clutch..etc. If your throwout is bad it will probably be making noise when you have the car running and in neutral. Best thing is to take a day and dig into everything. Replace the clutch while your at it....you can loose a lot of power with a bad or worn clutch.
