shift cable?


i just got done swamping a 2.6 for a sbc 400 and a th700r4 and now when i move the shift handle it wont shift the tranny. is it the shift cable or what?
its a 88 RS is there any way to thighten it?

It could be the shift cable. The best thing to do is crawl under the car and see what's going on. The cable connects to a little lever on the transmission that moves back and forth. Make sure the cable is attached to this lever (not to be confused with the bracket bolted to the tranny pan). If it's connected, disconnect it and move the lever back and forth to make sure the tranny will shift. If that's OK and the cable is attached to the lever then it's possible the cable is binding up somewhere. The best thing would be to have someone in the car shifting gears while you are under it watching what the cable and lever are doing. Also it could be that the cable isn't attached to the shifter mechanism in the car correctly. I believe the cable on the left is the shifter cable. The one on the right is the park lock cable. Maybe you hooked these up backwards somehow? Hope this helps.
