Hi, I have an 87 700 and a Ford 9 rear from Moser, and a B&M shift kit. When I put the car in reverse using the rachet shifter, the car makes a loud clunk. I know the rear setup backlash is a little off, and have been meaning to fix it, but what else could be causing this clunk? Thanks.

Possibly what you mentioned, or bad u-joints, or the fact that 87 transmissions didn't have the smoothest shift out of park could be some causes.
Hope this helps at all, but some early transmissions did some hard-*** shifts out of park.

 

My 84 would beat your head off the dash soemtimes!! I think you just have to put up with it. My 91 is a lot better.
