My son-in-law and I swapped out the Crossfire motor in my 1983 T/A pace car, and put in a built 1985 305 with an Edelbrock performance package we pieced together...carb,intake,cam,lifters,rods,timming gears and double roller chain, then added a 50k ignition. After the transplant, (a beautiful running motor I might add!) we noticed the shifting was really weird....real quick through the range unless you drove it easy..........which is not what the motor was put in for. Also it didn't want to maintain overdrive. It has a 700R4 Transmission in it as of right now. I forgot to mention that the computer is no longer in control as it has been bypassed. The car is running old school. Anyway, is there an oversight on our part with the tranny, or is the PC being bypassed have something to do with it, or is the 700R4 the problem period! We have been told that there is a rev shut down of sorts on the tranny, and since the motor has almost double the horsepower the tranny can't keep up. If anyone out there has a cure for my cars ills.........please give me a shout. This tranny problem hasn't let us realize the cars full potential. I would thank any help I could get.
Is the T.V. Cable hooked up correctly? It's imperative this is set up for the trans to function correctly, and live.
Please forgive my lack of knowledge, but I was only the assistant and not the doctor. My son-in-law is the skilled physician that did tthe motor transplant. So, by TV cable, would you be talking about the Kick Down cable at the carb? If so, please explain how to do the adjustment. If this isn't it, where would the TV cable be located and how would IT be adjusted. I appreciate you help.
Yup the kickdown cable. Since the vehicle was a crossfire, and swapped to a carb there is probably an issue with the geometry. If you do a google search I'm sure there is a write up on how to get it to work correctly.
Thanks, I'll try googling it.

you can damage the transmission by driving it with the t.v. cable disconnected. If you get the geometry correct and it doesn't shift good the damage might already exist/if it was left disconnected at any time. it is not a "kickdown" cable and iroc212 is correct in that it needs to be correct for the transmission to function properly.
I didn't drive it with the TV cable disconnected. I have only driven the car for limited periods. maybe 4 times since the motor was finished earlier this month. I did find a link after I googled the adjustment at www.tciauto.com/Products/Instructions/instructions/gm_tv_cable_adjust.htm
There are underscores between the last parts of the link. Also I found out that there is an adapter you need on the carbs throttle to allow it to make full throttle if you have a Holly or Edelbrock carberator. Hopefully this will fix the prob and hopefully the tranny didn't get any damage. Thanks for all the help so far guys!
