trans question
Just was wondering what everybody thought about for what would be the best trans and why... I would like kinda a detailed description of the difference between a powerglide and perhaps a th400.. I am going to drop a 383 stroker in my car that is producing 446 horsepower and wanted to know really what would be the best for me to be thinking about... 350,400,700r4,powerglide...

Re: trans question
Depends on exactly what you need it for. Each transmission is equally good but each tranny can also be superior in a specific application.

Re: trans question
the glide is mostly for cars that run 9 seconds or better as one less shift with such high revving motors and tall tires-low gears is all they need to reach max rpm.
the th400 is a good choice for high horsepower motors-to towing. it is very versatile and wears slowly when built correctly for the application.
the th350 is mostly for small block applications but can withstand hp when built up. mostly not for larger than the 383 engine-can be made to last at the hp given with little problem. it wears a little faster than the th400 under high hp and also if the vehicle sits for long periods of time.
the 700r4 i'd say lasts a little less than the th350 time wise, and is mostly used at the same power levels as a th350. the overdrive once used to it is hard to live without so if you've had a good one (needs upgraded definately for a 383) you would probably steer clear of the three speeds with a 383.

Re: trans question
thanks for all the help you guys... I would like it to be a weekend car sort of because of the fact that me and my dad work together and have a company truck so I really wouldn't drive it daily just on the weekends at the track and maybe just cruising around every now and then... That's why I'm going with the 383....

Re: trans question
you're welcome. You have a 700r4-just do some small upgrades with the 383 install. I'd recommend the jet servo(looks the same as a t.c.i. one) it is extremely easy to install with no mods and firms second nicely with more hold power than the vette servo by %35, as a side note it also firms up third as there is a spring eliminated from the servo. I really like this servo.
I'd also replace the t.v. sleeve in the valve body so you could max throttle shift into fourth gear.
just some random thoughts.
