tranny won't shift out of first, need help quickly!!

Hi all

A friend of mine owns a 86 camero (v6 auto). He just bought the car a month or so ago and it supposedly had a rebuilt tranny and engine with the papers for the tranny. Well I got a call last night asking if I could come over because his tranny is stuck in first gear. Well when I got their I was stumped at first because the tranny was not slipping it was just not even trying to change gears which doesn't sound like a transmission going out but more of a vaccum hose being cracked or found it's way off. Sense I don't work on american cars that much I really didn't know where to begin to look, so I can here to see if anyone has had this problem before and hopefully it's just a problamatic line. Also the car is able to be put into revers, neutral and first (even when you manualy put it in 2nd) I know that doesn't mean much but it is always good to know. Well if anyone could help us We would be greatly appreciated

thanks
Stephen

The tranny is not vacuum operated unless someone has put in a TH350. Try setting the TV cable first. Secondly it could be the governor either sticking or the plastic gear on it has broken. The governor is under a round dome cap on the drivers side rear of the tranny. Prise the cap off with a screwdriver and pull the governor out.

It appears the tranny's governor is the problem. check it out.

The 700R4 does not have a modulator. The TH350 does. The 700R4 has a TV cable and a governor to control shifts.
