junkyard treasure?

I was in the junkyard today and I found what I believe (after studying the car) an 85 IROC. It had a 10-bolt with disc brakes. should I get this rearend? It had TPI and there was no G92 RPO listed. What carrier could it be? What would the stock gear be?

It sounds like the rear I bought! I can't remember what year it was now 84 or 85 but, it was a 10 disc and came from a z28. it had the posi 3.23 gears and also had the metric lines. so I lucked out. but, was told the 82-83 have sae lines. hope this helps.

Sounds like you've found exactly what I'm looking for!

My local thirdgen salvage yard is telling me that the 10 bolt disc rears aren't all that common compared to the 9-bolt.

I want a 10 bolt disc dammit!

if I get it and build it with all the strongest stuff I can find do you think it could take 420+hp?

I found an 86 like that. I didn't care what was in it since I was going to change everything anyway. I just wanted the housing with the disk brakes. It replaced the factory 9 bolt with disk brakes that was in my car.

Since then I've built it up with 4.10 gears, 28 spline axles, LPW rear cover, welded tubes etc. Only 6 hard passes on the diff so far and it's still holding up.

does it still feel ok? Is it making any sounds? I have only 100 miles on the 9-bolt in my Z(it was installed before I got the car) and it is not taking the power of my engine. I don't know the history of the rear or how it was treated but I haven't done much to beat on it and it isn't liking it.

150 is what I payed they are a bit weaker than the 9 bolt but, the parts are cheeper for them.

they are harder to find but, that doesn't make them worth much.
