Transmission Question on engine swap

I'm having problems figuring out which transmission I have. Tomorrow I plan to crawl under my car and get the numbers off of it to help my search. Right now I have an 88 v6 2.8l sport coupe camaro and I'm upgrading it to a 350. Is there a way to tell what the transmission is from the vin number? This is assuming that it hasn't been changed but it only has 85,000 actual miles on it so it could very well be the original. I put a new clutch in it recently and I remember the mechanic calling it a K2 tranny if that helps, but he said the transmission itself was in good condition. Ultimately I'm trying to find out if I can keep the transmission and if not which to get. I hear the th-400 is better than the 700r and cheaper but I want 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opinions.

Thanks

Re: Transmission Question on engine swap

*Update
It is raining today and I have no garage so I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow for the numbers. I also did a little research and realized that I can only find the above in automatic so I'm assuming it doesn't come in manual. My current transmission is manual.

Welcome to TGO. You have a T5; however, the V6 version won't fit a V8 without modification--and then the 350 will destroy it. You're better off to purchase a WC T5 from an 88+. Even then, it may not last if you drive the car hard (There are after market manuals that might interest you, such as the Tremec). Check the T5 FAQ sticky.

Thanks, I don't ever drive the car hard. I work less then 5 minutes away from home and that's all I drive it for, but If I'm going to go ahead and switch to one that works well with it what should I go for? I do want to stay with manual.

If you're not going to beat it, I'd throw in a World Class (WC) T5, 88-92. I run the non-WC behind a 350/330 without difficulties--but I drive pretty sedately.

Re: Transmission Question on engine swap

Hi,
I have a question.
I own 90 V8 Iroc z z28 convertible and want to convert it to manual transmission. Its not easy to get iroc in manual transmission here in Dubai (UAE). however I managed to find me a 6 speed gear (Complete) for 93 V8 camaro. I was wondering if i could fix it in my Iroc Z. Will it fit and if not then i have another options to put it on RS 1992 T Top (one of the other camaro I Own)

Any idea if it will work.
