B&M Megashifter, is it worth it?

Does anyone have one of these? It look cool as hell, but does it really help things out? And most importantly, is it easy to install by yourself?

I haven't done the thirdgen console model, but I'd say it's worth it if you spend any time at all at the strip. I catch myself trying to shift the Camaro the same way after I've driven the '57. I did the install myself except for tightening the mount bolts to the tunnel, but I honestly don't know if that's a problem with the thirdgen model.

I've heard the Hammer is a little better quality. You'll have some switch installing/rewiring to do with your '92.

I have one in my 74 camaro with a TH400 tranny. it kicks *** , i think. shifting and not worrying about missing a gear is cool.. if you dont have an aftermarket shifter yet, i highly reccomend one. I have heard of people having problems installing, but thats why you got this message board

  • 83 Z28--ttops, 200k miles--very ragged out. sold, thank goodness
  • 74 Z28--slightly modded 383, TH400 tranny, not too quick but fun to drive

Fromm what I heard the installation's a breeze. I just ordered one 2 days ago, and hopw to get it installed soon. As far as I know all you ahve to do is cut your console a little with a saw and reconnect the TV cable. From what I heard the directins are VERY good and anybody can install it. I hope to have working by Monday. I'll post pics and any probs with it.

I installed the console megashifter in my 91 RS. The installation was fairly easy, if you follow the directions and are somewhat mechanically inclined.

It is true that you have to cut the console, but you also have to cut the wires for illumination and back-up lights and splice them to the new shifter. The back-up lights also do need to be adjusted.

Once that is all done, the shifter cable itself will need to be adjusted. It took a couple of tries to make sure all the gears were "accessible". That is pretty much it.

It looks cool, and is even more fun to use. I have had my car to the track a few times, and I love it.

Yes a B&M mega-shifter is a big improvement . You will be able to shift and not worry about missing a shift (Like stated above) plus they look real nice.

ok i installed mine with the help of a few friends, first thing is first,
only ask one friend to help, and make sure he is pretty good. if you get too many of you, then it gets confusing, and second of all, make sure you have all the tools you need, drill bits, bolts, maganet on a rod to fetch the bolts you drop.
and read the directions like three times, then have someone read them to you slowly so you can picture what you have to do in your mind.
if i would have done all of this. maybe mine would have gone in easier,
well after 4-6 months, i broke my original shifter cable, so i replaced it with a 4' HD cable(really thick cable).
second i have no reverse lights, and if any one knows how to fix that. fill me in. i really like my reverse lights and now i dont have any.
and my shifter is unbelievably hard to get out of park, but my friends 92Z is really easy, it matters on how much use, and what you use it for i guess.
and whatever you do, DONT ARMOR ALL THE black piece, i was told not to and after seeing a friend do his i found out why, it started to crack and then fell apart about two weeks later, it was soo funny!!

there is a pic of mine, the plate is off so i could hook up the shift indicator on mine. i didnt do it right the first time so i had to redo it. the shifter has been a pain for me, but i love it when i am driving, and especially since most people wanna drive my car, but then they look at the shifter and say: "i cant drive a stick", then i tell them its an auto and then they sit in there and dont know how to work it so, guess what, THEY DONT GET TO DRIVE! wait no one gets to drive it EXCEPT me!
so it has worked for the best. and it improved my track racing, and in town fooling around.
i have had fun with it, i just wish it wasnt so hard to shift out of park.

Hey, your steering wheels in on upside down. Just kidding. They look nice and work great. They do take some extra effort.

They're supposed to keep you from overshifting when you shift manually. Mainly they just raise your impression ratio.

I installed mine a couple of day ago and I have no problems with it at all. I wasn't impressed with the install but once it is together it works great. I like the ratchet action. I don't think my tranny will last the summer though. I don't mind having the auto now. You get to shift and still have the convenience of the auto in the city.

WS6, the main advantage is that when you have it it first gear(lets say you are racing somebody), when you want to shift to second you can slam it forward as hard as you want to and it will only go into second. All the forward gears and neutral are this way. Also, you can't go from neutral to reverse/park at all. You must go from OD to reverse/park with the t-handle pulled.

Mine went in easily too... hardest part (well, "scariest"?) was cutting the console lid for the shift plate.

Most "pain in the butt, but easy" part? Adjusting the shift cable underneath the car. Make sure that (A) you have the right hole in the "new" B&M shift lever, and (B) you check that thing's alignment 20 or 30000 times. Don't just hop under the car twice and be done with it!

Tip? As you go thru the instructions at your kitchen table, when a step calls for some parts, take those parts, and put them in a plastic baggie. Tie the bag shut, use a permanent magic marker to write the # of the instruction step on it. Then highlight the "STEP #" of the instructions. It'll save you hunting for (and losing!) those tiny parts on your garage floor.

I used the Radio Shack relay the B&M instructions mention. Wiring it was easy.
