4l60E

I have a 96 Trans Am, I'm in the prcoess of putting in a non carburated motor.

The wiring harness ,and ECM are all intact-
my question is what most be done to operate the 4L60E transmission correctly.

well the 4L60E is a different set-up than the normal 700R-4 (same tranny). The 4L60E has a stand-alone comp that controls the tranny. The 700R-4 is controlled by a regular on board comp. SO all you need is the PROM that goes to the 4L60E

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, ASCD SS hood, 16" IROC rims.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames, Hurst shifter, dakota digital gauge package, procharger supercharger.

Actually it is a little more complicated than that. The '96 has a PCM (Powertrain Control Module)that controls both the tranny and engine. It is therefore more sophisticated than the regular ECM and the ECM doesn't have the capabilities to run it, not to mention the harness for the 4L60E.

There are companies that make stand alone boxes to control either the 4L60E or 4L80E that allow you to alter your shift points and firmness by turning *****! If you're interested I could find the name of the company, but I don't know it offhand.

I think Jet sells a ECM for putting a 4L60E into a carberated car/truck. Check with them.

I dunno how much it is.

Jet makes one , but they don't have it on there web site,

TCI makes one also, but its like 800

I don't understand what reading the trans needs off the engine ?

Its getting throttle postion from the TV cable, so why would it need information from the Throttle positon sensor.

and the speed sensor is not a part of the engine

The 4l60E doesn't use a TV cable. The PCM controls shift points, shift firmness, tcc lockup (including PWM, if equipped).

The 700R4 has a TV cable that runs from the throttle linkage to the trans, and tells the trans with the help of the valve body, when to ship how to shift

Although the 4L60E doesn't have the TV cable that runs into the Trans, there is a TV cable, but it runs into a relay/sensor box, this box then connects to the PCM and intern gives it all the information about throttle
position, which the PCM then Tells the transmission electronically how and when to shigt, by control selonids in the Trans and valve body.

So My question is what else does the trans need, what otehr readings and sensors?

The 4L60E does not have a TV cable, it uses the TPS from the engine for the same info.

In a stock application, it uses many of the sensors already on the engine to determine shift points/feel. It uses the VSS in place of the govenor, engine rpm to compare input speed to the output speed and other functions, MAP to determine engine load.

The list is long!

Working on:
'84 Z28 LG4 305 with 200,000 original miles!
Added dual elec fans.
145 MPH IROC Speedo
Building 430 HP 350 (ZZ430)
using primarily GMPP parts.
Short block sitting on a stand. (Man, those Fast-Burn heads sitting on it look good!)

Starting to look like the Kicker poster child!

well is there anyway to convert to to full manual valve body?

The stand alone units from GM and TCI don't recieve all those values, so how do they run the trans? Must be on a preset table of values. Why can't the STOCK unit be programed with the same values?

ITs like when you blow a senor or theres a malfunction with one of the sensor's on the engine managment side of the PCM. The car doesn't just stop running, its throws a code to the computer, CHECK ENGINE GOES one, and the PCM falls back on a prest table of values on how the engine SHOULD run , granted you won't get peak performance this way, but it will work, why can't the same hold true with the transmission?

If you want to convert the 4L60E to a full manual, then here is how you do it. (1) Replace the force motor with a vacuum modulator from Trans-Go. (2) Install the Trans-Go 4L60EHD-3 Peformance Full Manual Shift Kit. It is now full manual with vacuum modulated pressure control. Just remember it is just like a stick, 1st is 1st and 2nd is 2nd etc., "at any speed".
Hope This Helps!!!

Thanks for your reply, on thirdgen about the 4L60E transmisson

Just a quick question-

How involved is changing the Force motor, to a vacum modulator?

And also how hard is it to put a Shift Kit in the 4L60E, I've put shift kits in TH350's before

Is this something the average backyard mechanic can do/ or is this something I should take it back to the shop that built the trans?
