Well either with the clutch or anything else under there that would easier to get to with the tranny out.

What's the benefit of the poly mounts? What about the clutch fork or shift fork? Should I do those while I'm down there?

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

If your doing the clutch, I hope you're gonna change the throwout bearing as well. I would also check the flywheel for scoring and the input shaft on the trans for bent splines. I'd probably change the tranny fluid too if it was my car. Maybe even go so far as to change the U-joints on the driveshaft. Anytime I take something major apart on the car, I make sure to change everything that looks like it might even remotely possibly sometime in the next 2 years need changed.

I agree with you. I want to do as much as I can while I'm under there.
I'm deff doing the throwout bearing though. I already have it. lol I changed the tranny fluid last week in an effort to try to fix the car from popping out of first. It wasn't successful either... I'll take a look at the input shaft and replace the U-Joints too. Thanks. BTW what do you think would make the car pop out of first?

Poly will serve you longer--I wouldn't be surprise if the OE rubber mount is toast. Resurface the flywheel, new pilot and throwout bearings.

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

Could I resurface the flywheel or would I need to take to to a machine shop?

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

Yeah, resurfacing the flywheel is a machine shop job. Not expensive, the shop near me charges $35. Popping out of gear can be the clutch, but more likely is internal to the transmission. Possibly a synchro issue, or a bent shift fork/rod. Any grinding noises?

Oh yeah. Lots of grinding. I'll put it into first and when it catches it's great. But more often than not it will just grind when I try to go, or It will start to go then pop out and make a grind. Someone else told me shift fork too but I couldn't find any instructions on how to fix that.

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

Fixing the shift fork requires a complete teardown of the trans. I'll be rebuilding mine in the next few weeks because of a similar issue with 3rd. It could just be a worn out synchro which is still a complete teardown and rebuild to fix. These aren't hard to rebuild from what I've seen, just time consuming. If that was mine, I would pull the trans and take the cover off of it. The shift forks will come off with the cover and you can check their condition without taking the whole thing apart. I would do that before replacing the clutch. If they are ok, then you just need to close it back up and swap the clutch out. If not, then you can decide what you want to do at that point. You can also check for chipped/cracked gear teeth and worn synchros while its open.

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

Hello everyone, i just finished doing the same to my car right now..it's a 1988 camaro with the 2.8 V6 and T5 manual trans...i replaced the clutch ressurfaced the flywheel new pilot..new throwout bearing and new slave cylinder.I pulled the engine because of leaking freeze plugs. Now when the car is off i can put it in any gear, but when the car is
ON it wont go into any gear and if i try reverse it grinds like theres no tomorrow. What could be the problem?? now if i put it in first when it's off then i turn it on it works... i can accelerate then shift into 2nd,3rd etc. but when it is at a dead stop and sometimes when running,it wont go into any gear. Can anyone help me plz. Thanks.

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

It sounds to me like the clutch is not releasing properly. May be that it either needs bled or is not adjusted properly somehow. Maybe the throwout bearing is not on the fork properly? I would pull the trans back out and check the clutch, TO bearing, clutch fork, slave cylinder, pilot bushing, etc and see if something is out of whack or binding. Did you replace the pressure plate? You may have a broken finger or 2, or weak springs if you re-used the old one.

Re: Replacing the clutch. Anything else?

Everything is brand new pressure plate, clutch disc, slave cylinder..etc...i just dont know what the problem could be, plus it's my first time doing this. And as for the fork i placed it inbetween the two walls that the TO bearing has....and we bled it really good 2... so that is set. anyother ideas?? i really don't want to drop the trans, but if i have too i will. thnx
