What shifter to get? Ripper, Megashifter, Hurts?

I've been looking for a shifter and want to know what you recommend. I've seen people post about the ripper but can't find it anywhere. Did they quit making it? I can't find it on their site. The console megashifter looks good. Does hurts have any good ones?

Thanks

yeah, they still make the Ripper. I have one on my car. You can get them from http://www.summitracing.com for around $165. It really firms up the shifts.

Just to let you know, the Ripper is a manual transmission shifter. The Maganashifter is for automatics. You'd probably be real dissapointed if you a Ripper for your automatic or vice versa. But whatever kinda trans you have, the shifters listed are great.

Sorry the hurts was just a type-o... My trans is an Auto. Can you regular shift the Megashifter or is it ratchet all the time? Hey "Like a rock 89" is that the megashifter?

I have the Megashifter... it's ratchet all the time. But, it doesn't go into ratchet mode unless you go after 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear. You can use the trigger to go between drive, neutral, reverse, and park.

On the two times I've had to valet my car since the Megashifter, that's what I told the guy: "To work that shifter, ALWAYS pull up on the center lever." Otherwise, they'll get stuck in ratchet, and I dont' need that.

Don't worry, the shifter's not a pain in the butt for everday driving. I think some guys in the "Appearance" message board posted pictures of their Megashifter...

To answer your question to Lik a ROC, that is a Hurst Dual Gate. I had one on a 74 Camaro I had and I loved it. It has a gate on the right side for aggressive use, but the gate on the left is for everyday use. It uses progressive stops on the right side gate to keep you from skipping a gear. Plus you can't go into rev. without pulling the shifter back to the left gate. That could save you a tranny in itself. It's really idiot proof. Good for me.

How much for that Hurst unit?
Can a B & M Mega shifter, work, also?
I have a B & M in storage, I'd love to install it on my 85 Firebird. I do not know if it's for a 3-speed or 4-speed. I'll bet, I could modify it, tho, to work for a 4-speed.

Apperance board has a pic of one?

I have the megashifter and overall it has been well worth the 100 bucks I paid for it. There have been a few minor problems that I think more than a few people have had problem with. The shift indicator cable on mine broke so it always indicates park. The switches are a pain in the *** to get working properly all the time. I need to go get a new shift **** now too because the clearcoat is rubbing off and it looks like crap. But I love the thing, look awesome and does the job a lot better than that wimpy stock shifter. I am liking the look of that Hurst dual gate, hmmmmmm........

The Megashifter isn't always ratchet, with the trigger in the up position it is in straight gate mode, check the instructions again, it clearly explains it.
