fixed governor problem but tranny still won't shift?
Thanks to everyone who helped with figuring out how to fix the car. But something still isn't right. When we took the governor out yesterday and the gear was totaly destroyed, half of it wasn't there and the other half was badly beaten. So we figured this was it and we proceded to fix it. Well around 2 hours ago we finished putting everything toghther (including dropping the pan and changeing oil, filter and gasket) Well we took it for a test drive and guess what it still doesn't shift. Now the only hope it gives is that it is actully trying to shift but is slipping when going into 2md gear. What I don't understand is how can the governor be bad and the tranny go out at the same time. Can anyone shed some insight on what to do next
thanks

Did you make sure none of the broken pieces were jamming the governor valve? And did you replace just the gear or put in a different governor. I have a bucket of governors in my garage and when I strip a gear I always be sure to match weights, springs and check for free movement of the valve.
Well we could not find most of the pieces, I stuck my finger as far as I coulf in the governor whole and I could feel where the gear fits into but no broken pieces. Well where would these pieces be. I found a few small pieces in the pan but nothing major but i was possibly thinking in the filter. WEll I was just wondering now why would the tranny be slipping now after I changed the govewrnor and not before. sense this was the first time working on an american car and an auto for that matter this is all new to me. It didn't take me long to do all the work but would I need to as my next step in figuring out the problem. Could the tv cable be any part of it, Would broken pieces in the gear cause the gear to only grab a very little causing the transmission to slip?
And infor would always be helpful

Yeah, I'll tell ya.
Just like mine.
I'm gonna PULL mine to rebuild it.
It's the band that wraps around the drum for the clutch pack.
It broke.
Out it goes!
I also removed valve body and got stuff to move.
Didn't do it.
I played with governor.
Didn't do it.
You still "catch" second, right?
Instead it jumps to third, right?
Band broken on the drum.
Out comes your tranny.
Mine too.
Atleast you have company.
Go get a recent special issue of Camaro Performance by Argus publishers (Super Chevy). Last article is a rebuild of a 700R4 with pictures. That article convinced me I can do this, too! You need a clutch pack compressor to do this job.

for your governor prob Im trying to go off of memory Im not at home with my books, but it sounds like the bushing(s) may be wore out causing too much vibration in the output shaft if you can see the last bushing se if there are any places where the bronze (copper colored) coating. if thats wore off then there is a good possibility for whats causing the governor damage. Like I said its all off the top of my head Im just trying to remember.
