axle ratio changes

I have a stock 1989 TA with stock rear, I guess its a 2.73 and I want to change the rear out for better take off. It seems too steep for take off since I am in OD at 80 mph and its only doing 2200 rpm. I would like to know HOW MUCH CHANGE I would see with a 3.42 rear and how much for the 3.23 rear. I dont really think I need that steep a gear for my car and its good on the highway but perhaps I still would see good low rpm with a change to the higher gears. I will be using my car on the highway and may want to have some fun running it on the track this summer. Can someone help me decide what rear gears that would best suite me?

Re: axle ratio changes

It will help acceleration, but I think money is better spent on making more power unless, like in this case, you could keep your old axle with freeway gears and get a used axle from another car for a couple hundred that wouldn't break the bank too bad. The 3.42's would be good, but 3.73s or 4.10s are probably more ideal for the track. You'll definitely feel the difference in how much different driving around is with the new pedal feel/reaction.

Re: axle ratio changes

The 3.42 is a very popular gear for cars that are driven a lot.
