Gear Whine...help please

ok about 2 weeks ago i upgraded my rear...went from a 2.73 open to a 3.73 posi...i used an SLP torsen posi (take out) and Richmond 3.73's...after the install there was a very slight whine for about 7-10miles then it completely went away..well 2 weeks later the whine is back..doesn't start till 1,500 RPM's then gets louder as the RPM's increase...makes noise on deceleration till 1,500...the backlash was set twice and im pretty sure its right...help me please!..thanks

check your tire pressure on both rear tires. to be more exact, raise the rear and measure the circumference of both.. if its off then it will make the rear whine cuse the two wheels are turning at a diff speed. did you use the right lube? hope it helps

Some gearsets aren't designed to be totally quiet, Richmond for some reason make more noise than others because their design is more for performance and longevity in exchange for more noise.
I'm not sure why it would change especially if you rebuilt the whole rear and replaced everything, you may want to check the pinion nut to be sure it didn't come loose. Keep an eye on it and if the noise continues to change then there is a problem. Just for reassurance you might want to pull the cover off and re check the contact pattern.

Whine is usually caused from the gear pattern being set too much towards the toe. It is also worse on race gears. A tow pattern is stronger than a standard or a heel pattern, but noisier. A race gear is set with more of a deeper toe pattern (also a softer gear material) for strength at the sacrifice of noise and life.

Do you have a picture of the gear pattern?

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES,it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. 4.11's to follow soon )
