ok this is my first post and i just purchesed a 1987 camaro for a project car. it orgianlly had a v6 in it. But from what i understand it has a 350 from what i was told. i will check the numbers to make sure if its a 305 or 350. but what i was wondering. he told me the rear end was stock and i was wondering if they come open or locked with posi or what?

 

If it was a V6 it is most likely an open 3.42 diff. as long as its stock

okay open means it will only spin one tire with less tranctions correct?ok i would like to lock it up where both woulld spin. how much would i have to spend to do that and would it be a diffucult process. sorry my spelling is not all that correct.

 

Look up Posi or Limited Slip Differentials otherwise known as LSD's, also there are Lockers too, Like detroit lockers, but i dont know much about those and if they are similar to a posi/lsd unit.

As far as I have seen they very from brand to brand. Have seen some from $500-$2000, and if you don't know how to install one it would be best to have someone do it for you. Someone who has done this before or knows how will be able to get it done fairly easy i think.

Start searching the forums. Figure out what rear end you have (Pretty sure its a 7.5 GM 10 bolt), then what LSD units fit, then price and compare.

Take a good time learning about these units. The brands, how they differ and what they are best used for.

It "may" not be a 10 bolt so the FAQ might not help. If the original engine was only a V6 then it will be a 10 bolt.

 

I recommend the Eaton Posi. They are rebuildable, tunable and will last a long time. They work well on the street as well as moderate drag racing. You will need the Posi, bearings and shims to set it up. I can connect you with a link that will explain how to install it. You will need a dial indicator with a magnetic base, a micrometer and a torque wrench. I can get you the Eaton for $435.

 

i guess it also veries on the seller. i found a 9 bolt with a 3.73 posi (used but not worn badly) for 150 bucks OBO on craigslist. (i know craigslist isnt always accurate but for 150 bucks you cant really go wrong)

 

Only the IROC came equipped with the 9-bolt in 87, according to the above link--at any rate counting the diff cover bolts will provide an ID. Doubtful that a V6 was equipped with L/S.
