need quick response- can I buy new 700r4 still?
I brought my 83 transmission into the shop last week because the tranny need servicing. Before I authorized them to do the taking apart (and the 300 charge), I said, now no matter, what, this won't cost more than a new transmission, right? they said no.
Well I got estimates of $1,300 bucks for a standard recondition and $2,200 for a custom, complete rebuild. I think that is rediculous. They said I can't get 700r4 transmission anymore. I don't think that is correct.
help.

That's BS! I can find "custom rebuilt" 700's for $1250. I know I can buy a brand new-from the GM dealer 4L80 for $1600, (I just did!).
There are several people on here that are running 700's that were rebuilt by Pro built automatics. I'm sure he'll be along shortly to comment. From what I've heard he is very knowledgeable and could probably do a better job for less.

do you know the website, or phone # for them? Or does anyone else have another place I can call/visit to get a 700r4 transmission for an 83 trans am.
I don't intend to pay a 300 remove/rebuild fee when I asked them upfront if, in the worst case scenario, it would cost more to get this thing rebuilt and serviced rather than buying a new one. They said it would not, and that I couldn't get a new one for an 83 trans am. Well, I'll have all the ammunition I need to deal with them once I show them I can get a new transmission
