9 bolt rear - questions

its out of an 89 Iroc, what gears does it have... i think its either 2.77. 3.23. or 3.42 but can someone verify, and is there any way to tell for sure which it has.

look in your center console and look for the RPO G92 on the sticker in the console.

auto w/ G92 = 3.27
auto w/o G92 = 2.77

standard w/ G92 = 3.42
standard w/o G92 = 3.27

Standard without G92 is a 10-bolt 3.08.

If you have the gears themselves, its written on the gears what ratio it is. If you have the whole rear end, you can turn the wheels once and count the number of times the yoke turns. If its still in the car, you can jack it up, put the trans in neutral, and then count as you turn the wheels.

There should ba a code on one of the axel tubes. I know that it is on the foward inner section but I am not shure what axel tube. a hayes manual(I think mine is still in N.J.-it could also be the chilton-oh well) has all the codes. By the way, bring a wire brush- there was allot of road grime on mine.

The yoke is where the driveshaft attaches to the rear end. You're counting the number of times that turns as the rear wheels turn. It'll be either 2 3/4 times (2.77), 3 1/4 times (3.27) or 3 1/2 times (3.45).

I have a 9 bolt rear in my 85 trans am and the only stamp I can find on it is "borg warner". Does anyone know if this was stock or something added later?

We need more info. TPI or TBI? Automatic or 5-speed? Single cat or dual cats. A 305 TPI or TBI automatic would have 2.73 10-bolt. A 305 TBI or TPI 5-speed with a single cat would be 10-bolt 3.08. A 305 TPI 5-speed with dual cats would be a 9-bolt 3.45.

85 was the first year the 9-bolt was used, in Trans Ams only.
