Shift to OD then D back and forth?!!?!?!

While a racing a ***** in my '85 Z28 305 TPI, we were doing between 120 and 130.... at that speed if I held the gas down, it would down shift the rpms would go to about 5300, then it would shift back to OD dropping the rpms to about 4grand, then it would shift back to D.... it's give me a push and pull thing going on. I couldn't go any faster, and lost as the result. I've done 150 easy before, what's the deal? Could this be from getting higher gears in the rear?

The stock trans shifts from 4 to 3 at anything more than 1/3 throttle. You need to buy a new kick down valve. The one from B&M allows WOT in 4th. The only downside to this is that once it goes into 4th it is very resistant to downshifting. You either have to slow way down or manualy shift it. Do a search for "kickdown valve" there is a lot of info about it on here.
