Pilot Bearing Installation

How far is it supposed to drive into the crankshaft??? Mine seems to only drive in half way, or is that normal?? I don't have a picture in my shop manual...it just says to drive it in with a tool. My old one fell out when I pulled the trans, so I have no idea how far it should go into the bore. Any help would be appreciated. - Jeff

BTW...I don't want to discover it's not in far enough after I have the tranny balanced on my chest under the car!!

It should go flush with the crank, I've seen a pilot bushing fall out on a friends firebird, a small piece was still stuck in the crank, maybe you have a part of the old one still in your and need to remove it.

Thanks for the info Jay - I was afraid of that!! I could only drive the bearing in half-way, probably got jammed in crooked somehow. What's the best way to get it out when it jams up??

Why the nasty grease trick of course!! Pilot bearings are a big PITA if you don't have a pilot bearing puller. They aren't cheap or easy to come by either. If you have a friend who has one, try to borrow it.
