Clutch debris on Filter. W/in

I was looking at that 4L60 trans again that I'll be soon installing into my IROC. I noticed that the filter wasn't nice and shiny like everything else in the trans, so I decided to wipe it off. Rag turned black with clutch material. So basically, the filter housing was coated with clutch material. Is this a sign of excessive clutch wear, or is this fairly normal on a trans that hasn't had the fluid/filter changed in a long time? The fluid didn't smell burnt, but it does seem to be a bit dark and somewhat brown in color.

Jim , I'm not an expert on automatic boxes, but one thing i've been told is "any colour other than red is bad news" - if the fluid is a dark brownish colour, then it has overheated at some point, if there are traces of black specks in the fluid, it generally means heavy wear of the internal clutches / brake bands, so I gather this does indeed point to excessive clutch wear !

An overhaul of the box will probably be in order....
