Best way to pull out axle bearings?

I have a 10 bolt from an 86 Firebird I'm working on and wondered how you guys get the axle bearings out from the end of the axle tubes? We tried putting 2 small pieces of steel on a carrage bolt, sticking one piece inside the bearing and one piece on the outside of the axle tube and turning a nut to pull the bearing out, but the steel bent and the bearing didn't move. Any ideas?

There is a tool that is made for that (slide hammer)but I just pop the axles out and use a push broom handle. Crude but it works

I went to the hardware store and bought a couple of pieces of 1 inch conduit (metal pipe) and slid it through the pass. side to beat out the drivers side bearing, and visa versa.

Make sure the pin isn't in the carrier

I do it the same way engineboy does: my favorite is a 6' piece of ¾" galvanized steel water pipe. Sometimes the simplest way is the best, even if it does seem kind of Stone Age!

I made a slide hammer using a spare piece of threaded rod, piece of water pipe, some washers, and a 10 pound plate from my weightlifting set. That way I didn't have to come near my posi unit at all... one side popped out like a charm, the other side took a while (and bent some washers).
