Rebuilding a 700R4 myself??
What am I getting into here? My new 4L60 seems to be a piece of crap, so I've basically got no choice but to throw my old ailing 700 back into the car for now, because as usual this crap happens when I've got other major expenses (moving into an apartment) coming up. Since I'm planning on a T56 in the near future, I can't see plunking down $1000 for a new trans or a professional rebuild. What sort of costs am I looking at for all materials, and just how difficult is this? Is it just a matter of remove and replace, or do I have to adjust tolerances, etc? Any amatures out there done this sort of thing?

It can be a matter of remove and replace if you don't change the clutch piston seals.
If you want to do it right and ensure yourself it won't be a total waste of time and money replace clutches, steels, sealing rings, band, gaskets and inspect all hard parts. You will need two types of clutch spring depressors, I made my set, that itself was time consuming and required the use of a cutting torch, large hole saw and drill press, grinder, welder and steel stock, you'll need snap ring pliers, feeler guages and basic tools.
The most important things are inspecting and cleaning everything, and getting the clutch clearances right and of course getting it back together properly.
Here is a site with some good information. http://www.transonline.com/totalTechDatabase/index.html

I'm looking into doing this also. I just fried the 3/4 clutch pack in my 2 year old 700r4. Anyone know what the parts cost is?

Parts cost for a rebuild? JC Whitney has a super high performance rebuild kit for under $200, it comes with a trans go 2/3 shift kit and everything else, an order sheet from trans go is included for optional things like boost valve, etc. JC Whitney has a few different kits, be I thinks they call it a super heavy duty high performance kit or something like that....Summit and Jegs has them also for around the same price but includes stock B&M garbage.
If you want the correct parts for doing this unit, give me a call. I have helped many on this board with their transmission problems. You will need the ATSG rebuilding book $15.00 it is one of the better ones. Depending on what you are trying accomplish, I should be able to answer any questions you might have and supply with the parts you need. 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 11-7 PST, or email me at probuilt1@earthlink.net

Pro-Built,
Cost is my major factor right now. If it looks like the auto is going to cost near what a ZF conversion will, I'll have to go with the conversion. After frying 4 of them, I just don't trust the durability of the autos. I already plan to purchase a TC from you if I decide to stick with the auto. The ability to purchase the rest of the parts would be the best, as you seem to have a better understanding of this trans than anyone I've talked to. Here are my concerns with doing the job myself: #1, I don't know what parts to order, as I don't know exactly what updates have been done by the previous shop. #2, Having never done this before, I don't know what my odds of success are. I've done everything else from building engines to eprom programming, and I have a decent shop to work in. What's your opinion?

Lets assume that nothing is done as to updates. If I supply you everything for a complete rebuild, the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, 8 Borg Warner Hi-Energy clutches in the 3-4 pack, BW Hi-Energy 2-4 band, large boost valves, turbulator low drag steels in the low/reverse & reverse input, all the other clutches, bushings, seals, gaskets, new stator, etc., and the late sunshell and a new rear planet. Cost on this is $525.00. You will need a bushing driver set, a clutch spring compressor, and a ATSG build book (apx $15.00). I don't know if you can rent/borrow the drivers & spring compressor. It would be nice to have someone who is familiar with the 700R4 to help you if possible. If I can be of help let me know.
