To be truthful... get at least a 350. I had a question like that too. Basicly I can tell you what I was told. You can go ahead and get heads, cam, intake, headders but they won't be AS efficent as they are on a 350 or larger block. I don't know how much you are lookin to spend but I wasn't trying to spend more that $2,000. I'm gonna end up buyin a block and getting it rebuilt with some of the items I wanted for my 305, intake, headers. Maybe even the cam. I might be spending only something like $1200 to $1500 now. At least I know that even with just these few things I'll have more hp and tq at the wheels then I did but not as close as with the mods for the 305. I have heard the you can get around 300hp and 320 ft pounds out of a 305 but when compaired to something like 330hp and 380 ft pounds out of a new "stock" GM Goodwrench 350 HO (about $2000) there's no real comparison.

It all depends on what you want. Is this a daily driver, if so then you will most likely want to rule out things that hurt mpg or emissions(depending on local laws). It also depends on how much money you want to spend and how long you intend on keeping the car. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't get a 305 to go fast, there is a guy on this board with a turbo or blown I forget which one that is running 11'2-12's I believe. If you stick with the 305, definately get new heads, cam, intake, I take it you have TPI. I am not familiar with the components of fuel injection so I'll let someone else answer that for you. Or if you want to spend the money you can get a new crate engine from GM, I believe you can get a 330hp 350 for $2100 from Jeg's, that includes all new block except for intake, distributor, manifolds. So basically then you should buy headers with a complete cat-back. As far as headers you get what you pay for. When I had my 305 I noticed a big improvement with the Edelbrock headers, but they rust fast unless you get them coated. Slp makes good headers that most people recommend. Then there is the choice of 3" cat-back. Pesronally I just ordered the Hooker AeroChamber cat-back, sounds good and is very free flowing. Or you could go with Borla but they are expensive. If you go with a 350 or even high hp 305, you probably want to get a new Torque converter with a higher stall speed. I am not sure what gears are stock in an 88, but I have 2:73 that I am about to have 3:73's installed. Which will hurt mpg, but I want to accelerate. You might want to choose 3:42 gears, these are the best all around gears. Do you have a T5 or 700r4 tranny. If you have a T5 I believe you would have to have it rebuilt to sustain the extra power. The 700r4 might be able to handle it I'm not sure. And with the extra HP/Torque, you will need suspesion work.
Again you have decide how much money you are going to be spending and whether or not you will keep your 305 or go with a 350.

I would like to know how to get 300hp out of a 305. Could it be done naturally asperated? Also wouldn't the 305/300hp have a better output than a 350/330hp. By the way there are 405hp 350's out there. They are rare and expensive. They are called LT5's and only came out in ZR1 corvettes made after 1993.
