Sloppy shifter on 700R4..doesn't always engage.
A friend of mine is having trouble with her tranny. stock 91 Z28, 305TPI 700R4. This started recently and has been getting progressivly worse.
The shifter feels very sloppy, with greatly reduced "click" from one position to the next. It often doesn't go into gear at all when the shifter is moved. You mave to move it back and forth between neutral, OD and D before it will finally engage. The same problem for going into park....and possibly all of them altho she hasn't checked.
Whats the problem? Is it the shifter itself or something in the tranny itself?

Yep, you can take your ergonomically designed, space age, computer controlled, 4 door, cup holding map lighted split double wishbone split fold down retractable cargo covered moon roof piece of transportation and keep it. For I have felt the thunder. And I know the difference!"

How does the trans actually shift? Is it ok? It sounds like there is a problem in the consol and not the actual trans. Take the center consol off and check for broken, bent parts. Did she lean on it wrong? What caused this? I think the gates are a little screwed up, goto the junkyard and pull an old shifter assy out, that should do it.

It could also be a loose nut inside or outside of the tranny linkage. I would look there if the shifter checks out OK. The nut could be loose that holds the cable to the linkage. If that is OK then take that off and see if the tranny itself has solid detentes. If not then the nut inside must be loose.
