Convertor Identification - Help Decipher

I have the engine out with the tranny and convertor hanging.

By VIN number the vehicle is an 87 Camaro and originally came with an LG4 (Carb - VIN H) 305 and 700 R4 with 2.73 open rear.

Soon after I bought it I found that it was an 84 MY L69 305HO non cc and the Tranny was an 86 MY (6YWM) 700 R4. The rear may just be the original (4HD) 2.73 open.

Now I see the Convertor hanging there and I begin to wonder what the hell that might be. Most everything else is different.

The Covertor has a stick-on label that says 'Remanufactured for GM' and on the rear curvature is stamped '5 0' several times between the dimples around the edge.

My question is the code that is stenciled on the perimeter 'DB8F'. I thought all 4 should be alpha. The 3rd digit is an 8, not an H?

I believe it to be a K-140 2,025 RPM stall speed. Can anyone confirm that?

I did refer to the folowing link.
http://w3.one.net/~rcheek/impala/faq/faq.cgi?transmission%2Fconverter%2Ehtm l#transmission_converter

Thanks.

I had a similar question awhile back that wasn't answered. If anyone can answer the above question, I have 6's around my TC. Any idea what this means?

You may try a local converter rebuilder if one is available. I got my converter rebuilt and they let me watch. They had a book that had the codes in it. apparently the number stamped around the circumference is the number they looked at to determine stall speed, I tried to glance at the book but don't remember much about it now. The sticker on it has information about the converter clutch, what material and damper spring specs, etc.

I am away from the shop for a week but I have a manual there that lists this info. Remind me in a week and I will check it out, if you don't get an answer before that.

Hey Leo, how was your vacation? It's been hot in Michigan too.

Here is the story. 1st Digit is the application. B=250c and 350c. C= 200c 2004R Pre 85 700R4 and 325-4L. D= 85 up 700R4. 2nd Digit is for the K-factor or stall. B= 140-k 2025 stall. E= 115-k 1654 stall. F= 110-k 1611 Stall. G= 100-k 1397 stall. K = 85-k 1211 stall.
3rd Digit is for the clutch and damper type.
There is a long list of options and you dont care about the 3rd digit. 3rd digit will not be used in an aftermarket or rebuilt converter unless a specific code should be replaced exactly. This will include converters used in caddys that "read" stall speed and clutch release such as a CF9C etc.
An aftermarkt or reman conv for your converter code would be DB-F or any cover code. F being the cover code.
The 4th digit is for the cover or bolt pattern.
C= Lock Up 3 lug gas
D= LU 3 lug diesel
E= LU 6 lug
F= LU 3 lug 245mm style
G= LU 3lug 245mm style
SOME converters will not have a sticker but will have a # stamped between the dimples of the impeller.
5=1611 or 2025
6= 1397
7=1654
4= 1211
The only # YOU really care about is the stall speed. You would not put your conv on a diesel pickup nor would you want a low stall in your car. I hope this helps Any other ? maybe I can help. Troy
