From: 51°N 114°W, 3500'
Car: 87 IROC L98
Engine: 588 Alcohol BBC
Transmission: Powerglide
Axle/Gears: Ford 9"/31 spline spool/4.86
In and out is normal. That's the space between the end of the axle and the cross pin in the differencial carrier. If it's excessive then the c-clip falls out and the axle comes out.
Forward and backward or up and down is either a worn axle or worn axle bearings. If the axle seal isn't leaking then it's probably within tolerances.
