I think you'd also have to switch your axles since they're 26 spline (probably) and the 92's are 28 spline.

i'm not using the carrier the only thing i'll use will be the ring and pinion. what i need to know is if the rear axle in 83 was a 7.5 or 7 5/8 and what the rear axle size is in the 92

The 7.5 and 7.625 interchange. Do you have a 2 or 3 series carrier? The 3.73's will require a 3 series carrier. What gear ratio do you have? An open rear with 3.73's will have some traction problems, may need to upgrade to a limited slip or powertrax or something.

Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, current red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...

The difference between the 2 and 3 series carrier is the thickness of the surface that the ring gear mounts to. On lower (numericly) ratios the ring gear needs to be closer to the center so the mounting sureface is thicker. The opposite is true for 3:23 and up.

Goto www.slponline.com they have take-off posi units for sale.. they are $100.. MUCH better than spending $300 for an auburn or powertrax. The SLP unit it designed for 28 spline axles, so you are covered.

I suggest buying the posi unit, a gear installation kit and taking the rear out. Then take it to a reputable installer.

i guess what i need to do is just crawl my lazy *ss under the car and find out what gear ratio is in there now and that will help to determine if the 3.73's fromthe 83 will work in my 92. now the 83 did have 4wheel disc with the 3.73 auburn if that helps any in determining if they will fit the 92

I think that's backwards. The numerically lower gears have a larger diameter pinion, so the ring gear has to be farther away from the center. For instance, you can get 3.73 gears for a series 2 carrier, but the ring gear is thicker and uses longer bolts.

I think thats right, since you CAN also use a spacer to fit a normal series 3 gear in a series 2 carrier.
