I have been noticing this thudd coming from drivetrain somewhere in the rear of my car. It only does it when I first put it in drive or reverse and when it downshifts to first.

I've just about rulled out the U joints and the tranny mount is good, so I checked the rear for play in the gears and I can turn the driveshaft about 1/4 inch or so before the axels turn the wheels. Is that normal ? I'm trying to troubleshoot what else could cause it.... Thanks Joe

if you're talking about backlash set up an indicator to measure it. i'd guess it should be around .008, check a manual to be sure.
