Changing tranny gear.. Which one?
I swapped out my 2:73 rear end for a 3:42. I am going about 10 under what the speedo reads at 70 mph. The gap grows w/speed. I would like to know what gear to use. By the way, the car (86 z28 IROC) seems to like the gears better.

i did that same swap. I have a 15 drive (gray) and 40 (black) driven. That seems to be right but i just put the 40 in today because the 41 (yellow) tooth gear read 3 mph low.

was the right gear a black gear with 40 teeth? is this the only gear to replace?

I'm pretty sure that the black gear is the correct gear, but i haven't had a chance to check it with a gps yet. Also you would need a gray drive gear, and a new housing for the driven gear(different housing for 39 up gear)
