383 and a t-5
well just wondering after i build this stroker, what would be the cheapest/least extensive way to go about the tranny. i know the stock t-5 will prolly not last long if i get on it.
this is going to be my weekend play car and maybe take it to the track 1-3 times a year to see the time she can put down. so it wont be abused on a regular basis. just wondering what the best route. i saw the TC 500's are about 2100 but i didnt call to see how much for the g-force.

My t-5 did not last the engine break in period 100 miles with 383 . Go with a lt1 t56 you can do that for about 2000 complete .

A G-Force will cost about $2,400, including the upgraded mainshaft, cluster support plate, labor and shipping both ways. Build it yourself and save $250 labor + about the same in shipping costs. I went the G-Force route because I like straight cut gears...
No complaints from me.

Re: 383 and a t-5
The T-56 is rated for 450 ft.-lbs. The G-force T-5 is rated at 500 ft.-lbs (with the upgraded mainshaft), and the TKO's are rated at 500 & 600. The T-5 is the only one that's a direct fit.
Ratings aren't perfect however. Impact is what really breaks them.

Re: 383 and a t-5
well as of right now i have no clue what the 383 will put down. but i plan on sticking more money into the engine later. mainly just better heads. i found a site that will send you a t-5 and some accessories for different HPs. i think it was 350, 400, and 450. the 450 hp vers was about 1500 shipped. i think the 350 one was 1250 shippped but i think these prices are only for a limited time.
this is the site would love an opinion

If you ask my opinion Jekt, the transmission is NOT the place to go cheap. To quote another board member: If you can't afford to do it right the first time, can you afford to do it again?

Re: 383 and a t-5
Buy a 700r4 on craiglist, rebuild kit, overhaul manual, lock up kit, stall and flex plate and be out from under it at 800-1200 depending on the stall. DRIVE YOUR T5 LEISURELY!!! i would not try to grab any gear or dump the clutch in 2nd b/c it will break maybe not the 1st or 2nd time but it will shortly after.

Re: 383 and a t-5
well yes the automatic rout ewould be easier but that would defeat the purpose of me hunting for 2 monthes to find a manual trans. this isnt going to be for racing either and i want my manual tranny.

Re: 383 and a t-5
Your T-5 should be ok for now, as long as you granny drive it. Don't even think about dumping the clutch on it now though, as your transmission isn't even a WC. Yours will be rated at 280 ft.-lbs

Re: 383 and a t-5
from what i have heard, t-5's usually only break on powershifts in 3rd gear since it is the middle of the gear cluster and the materials are weak. IMO, first would be the strongest gear. dont be afraid to dump the clutch but just dont expect your rearend to last long. wheelhop is your worst enemy. i shattered a posi from wheelhop on KUMHO street tires.. and those tires were a piece of crap. oh, dont try to powershift the stock trans either, the shock from powershifting is what moves the gears apart and thats when things break.
btw, i like my g-force. i got all the upgrades and its working like a charm. cost about $2700 shipped to my door. the 0.58:1 x-wide fifth gear is a life saver. i run 4.33 gears and @ 60mph i'm still under 2000rpm.
