the other day l was running my car down a street that was a few miles long, so l tried to top it out, and left it in OD when l hit about (what l think was 130-140) my speedo only goes up to 110, so l guessed, l think l hit 4th with it, it made a clunking noise when l hit 4th, and it started making a clicking noise afterwards, but l wasnt accelerating much faster after that happened, l got a pretty much stock 305, with a R4 trans and a set of 3.73's. l dont think 90 IROCs have a limiter on them, but l havent had enough road to experiment with it in the top end. anyone have any suggestions? l dont think my car reached top speed because the rpms are still pretty low like l still have another gear to go through.

i think you hit the rev limiter. 700r4 trannies don't shift into od at WOT. ain't gonna happen. and with 3.73's i don't think you were doin 130-140 either. did you have your speedo recallibrated? is yours tpi or tbi. TPI's have a governor at 105 ish. you were probably doin right around there.

It is possible to go WOT in OD but you need to modify the tranny(700r4). I'll look for the GM part # and post it unless someone replies with it before I do.

I believe the thing is that anything past 3/4 throttle it won't go into OD. I personally have had mine (89rs 305tbi) up to 125mph before the speed limiter kicked in, I know this because the car I was racing (conquest tsi) had a speedometer that went higher than mine which goes to 115mph. My speedometer has been off a few miles an hour for a while and it progresses at the speed gets higher so maybe this eas why I could that extra few miles an hour.
all speedos are off at high speed.the most accurate way...when you see a speed trap, turn around and go back by it at wide open throttle. then you will get a "time slip" of how fast you were going.
but seriously..
if you know anyone with a motorcycle (yamaha r6 in paticular) they have speedos that go upward of 200-220ish
and the yamaha has the most accuate speedo in production right now.
but any motorcycle will give you a better readingconsidering they go up so high you wont have to guess

my 92 z28 goes into overdrive at wide open throttle. it usually shifts into od around 100 mph. i was told the last years of the 700r4s were updated and this is one of the updates. it also doesnt downshift into 3rd at 1/2 throttle like the older ones like the one in my firebird.
