4th gen rear end swap

how hard would it be to swap a 4th gen rear end into a 3rd gen? does it matter if the 4th gen rear is from a v6 or a v8? would you have to do anything extra for the swap if you're changing out a drum rear?

Most 4thgens have ABS and you cant use their prop valve. Just use a prop. valve from a thirdgen that originally came with 4-Wheel discs. A junkyard should have it. Other than that, the 4th gen rear is a direct bolt-in. FWIW, the 4thgen rears are about 3-4" wider, so your tires will stick out a little further than normal. It still looks fine though, IMHO. The edge of the tires will almost be even with the fenderwells.
Try to get the rearend from a V8 car, b/c ALL V8 4thgens were posi.

After the fact

I've got a 98 rear with 3.23 posi, and it does bolt right on. However, I have had problems with my tires rubbing up against the lip of the wheel well. I'm not sure why either, I'm soon to be replacing my suspension with Eibachs, but thought to leave this note. If anyone knows why this is happening, plz let me know, it only happens on bumps and things, it's not like I'm sagging down that far. Thanks for all that post help.

Like said in the previous post, the 4th gen rear is 4 inches wider, 2 inches on each side. That means that each rear wheel will stick out 2 inches further. 4th gens don't have this problem since they used different offset rims. During normal driving, your car doesn't sag enough, like you noted, to cause contact, but when you hit large dips and bumps, the suspension allows the wheels to go up and hit the wheel well edges.

Understandable

I know what you mean, I'm just saying I've looked all over and not seen where anyone else is having this problem. I am riding on thicker tires, P235/R6016 which could also be attributing to the problem. Thanks for the post though, and do you think that me upgrading my suspension to the Eibach sportlines is going to be a bad thing?

Not all 4th gen V8 rear ends are posi.
Depending on the 3rd gen wheels you have, the wheel can stick out too far and look kinda funny.
I can take a pic of my friends 92 Firebird this week and post it.
Get a complete rear out of a V8 6 speed car, you'll get disc brakes, posi, and 3.42 gears.

I've got a 2.73 open rear from a 95 Formula for sale cheap (maybe even free). I just won't ship it.
