I get a popping noise in my rearend when hard cornering or after hard acceleration, like after I let off. is this the posi (detroit tru trac) , and is this normal? kind of annoying. thanks

Re: rearend "popping" noise
i was just looking into posi rear ends and one of the problems is that pre 92 rear ends use what they call a governor locking system. i hope i have that right. they wearout quickly, and they need to be replaced.
and they make a poping noise when turning too. take a look here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/1...-lifespan.html
and if its more middle of the car it can be your trans mount - they break all the time.
and dont forget the search button.
good luck

I had a problem that may be the same as yours. I talked to a mechanic at the dealership and got a couple small bottles of GM oil additive for posi rear ends. Put it in and haven't had any more problems.

Re: rearend "popping" noise
If it's a locker it could be due to the racheting action of the diff around corners. I've got the pos 9-bolt, but that uses cones for the posi. Don't hear any pops in my department.
Re: rearend "popping" noise
The Truetrac is a worm gear type limited slip differential. It doesn't have clutches or cones, and it isn't a locker. They usually don't require any oil additive, but it wouldn't hurt to try it. Did this Truetrac have preload or not? If it had preload then this noise might be normal.

Re: rearend "popping" noise
it's a moser 12 bolt tru trac posi (sorry shouldn't said that) I do have GM posi additive. so BIG are you saying this is normal? should I add more limited slip fluid? thanks
Re: rearend "popping" noise
You can get the Truetrac with and without preload. Preload means that it is set up tight so that it locks up better. This is more for high performance use. Most are set up without preload for street use. Preload can cause it to pop like a clutch type posi without the oil additive. I'd try to contact Eaton and find out if this is normal. You might have something broke that needs to be fixed.
