T5 Weakness
T5 Weakness
I have heard that T5s weakness is from flexing of the case causing failure. Do you think the torque arm has something to do with this? You have the motor twisting one way and the rearend doing another. Any thoughts?

My transmission guy says case is a problem, but also size of bearings limits amount of heat that trans can deal with. More torque,
more shaft speed, more heat=fragged T5.
Had him replace 2nd gear, 1 fork, input shaft and bearings/syncros at 60,000 miles.Won't waste any more $ on the T5 though. When it starts going away this time it'll be replaced by a Tremec or Richmond. With a rebuilt T5
going for $1200, it pays to spend a little more and buy a transmission that will hold up, in my opinion.

The biggest problem I have seen is that the case is too weak; it stretches acroass the front between the clutch gear and the countergear, which allows the gears to misalign, which makes them wear extremely fast. That's why you had to change your clutch gear and countergear. The synchros almost never wear out; they're a waste of money. Everything about the trans is small; it was never meant to be a high-performance piece, it's engineered for gas mileage.
The torque arm has nothing to do with it at all.
