9 bolt Axle leak ('87 Formula 350)

Anybody know where this is coming from:

I was working on something else when I noticed it, and I haven't had time to disassemble it (honestly, that just made me decide not to try to get everything done to go bracket racing this weekend, so I left it for now). Since I know that the 9 bolts don't use c-clips I'm assuming that it has some kind of different axle flange there.

Are the seals/bearings available for these or am I going to get stuck with the same problem as people have described with the gears in 9 bolts?

that looks like a seal in the axle has worn out
easy fix
1 take brakes off
2remove rotor
3 remove 4 bolts that hold backing plate on
4 pull axle out (may need a slide hammer to do this ..or an old brake drum sometimes works)
5 remove axle
6 get numbers off of bearing ,go to local industrial bearing supplier who WILL have a replacement
7 push old bearing off (press and press plates)
8 install new bearing
9 bolt everything back together
10 have fun
ohh and take note of the bearing number for future use
alternatively email 88 427 he will be able to give you bearing number so you have it there before you start ..
hope this helps

It's necessary to remove the bearing retainer by splitting it in half with a cold chisel. The new bearing and bearing retainer needs to be pressed on. Just make sure you get the correct bearing and seal. Caution: The seals are different for each side. You can take the axle out yourself and have a machine shop press on the new brearing. Then it is a simple matter to reinstall the axle and bolt in place.

The biggest reason that I suspected the bearing is that I've got a knocking noise coming from that side of the suspension also...

Does the bearing always have to be pulled off to replace the seal?

Will I definitely need someone to press it? I've pressed pinion bearings, carrier bearings and ring gears on and off before without a press (using my hands, a chisel and a freezer). I’m just trying to determine how long I’m going to disable the car if I take it apart and don’t have access to someone with a press till next week…

I have done, on my 9-bolt, what you are about to do. Yes the bearing must be removed to get the axle seal out. It would be simpler to just remove the shaft and take it to a local machine with the seal and bearing and let them do it for you. I paid $20 to for them to remove the old one and press on the new one.
