Whats the deal with Rears?

I want to get a Posi for my poor peg leg car. The problem is I have heard a few different stories, so can some one set me straight? I have heard that a 4th gen Rear will bolt right in to my car, just it will stick out a inch or two. Then I have also heard that if I do put the 4th gen rear in, I wont be able to run with my Stock 3rd gen wheels, that I will have to get 4th gen wheels or wheels that match it in size. BUUUT. Then i heard that 3rd gen wheels will fit on it. So I guess I am asking Will my stock wheels (15's) fit on a 4th gen rear? Thanks

Why bother with the new rear end just buy a posi good gears (Richmond) and after market axles and save your self TONS of money and headaches. Beside I don't think the new rear end are that much stronger and your car probably doesn't have the power to hurt the stock stuff.

You can use thirdgen rims on fourthgen rear axles, but I think the problem is the 15" rims are too small for the disc brake rotors.

I agree with SteetRCR but would go with GM Motive gears. Get a take out posi from SLP or whoever. The posi will be from a 4th gen and they are a little stronger then ours. Have a gear specialist do the install.

Axle/Gears: 10bolt Richmond 3.73 Torsen
I talked to popapork online about this. I told him that it would be a LOT cheaper to find a 4th gen rear with 3.42 gears and posi than to get all the parts and do what I did. I spent the least amount of money but it still cost $400 to get the job done by a pro. I spent another $100 on posi, $125 Richmond 3.73 gears (new and shipped), $110 for the Raltech deluxe rearend rebuilt kit. So I just spent $610+ for the job. I would have gotten a 4th gen rear but I wanted 3.73s. I think 3.42 is the best gear for an street car with an auto. I know you can get 4th gen rears with all the guts for like $300 you pickup. That's half the price!!!
A 9bolt is out of the question as far as $$$ because the posi unit is probably shot and expensive to replace.

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES, it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. I currently have 4.10 gear sets and new series 3 carriers in stock for 9 bolts )

You say you can get a 4th gen rear with 3.42s, posi, disc...fer like $300?

I have an 85Z and the rear has had it...now I want discs and better gearing for cheap..

Im new to all of this...

85Z 355w/nummies..stock trans...thats next for replacement.

how long does it take to replace the rear on yer own? or should a proffesional do it?
