richmonds are cut differant and make more noise than gm or other gear sets. as a rule i'd say no usually you don't hear it. is the oil level correct?

From the way you describe it, it's not loud. My '83 whined a little and I drove it like that for 15 years with no change or problems. After I blew the posi and spider gears on my '85, it whined a bit when coasting at low speed after I put the Torsen in. However, I believe that was because some of the pinion teeth were scored. It seemed to get louder as time passed and whined all the time after I got back from Memphis, so I had the gears replaced. The new gears were Richmond and whined just a tiny little bit, but I'm used to it now and don't even notice. I'd say if it isn't getting any louder, don't worry about it.

Some early f body rears ('82 and up) had a problem with the torque arm mounts distorting the rear end housing. I think they fixed it by mid '83. Probably not the problem but worth looking at.

Mine whines only when coasting I had a look at the gears and the spider gears were chunky looking (replaced them) but the ring and pinion looked fine.
