4th gen rear on '89 Firebird
4th gen rear on '89 Firebird
OK. I was talking with a guy at the junk yard and he told me that he had just got a 95,i think, Z28 Camaro. We talked for a while and I decided that I wanted the rear. He was wondering if it will fit?I say yes.
The rear has disc brakes and POSI.Good conditon.
The thing is, I dunno the gear ratio for that rear axle.IS it 3.23?
And I know the factory rims, on my 'bird, wont fit.
he wants $350 for the rear.I thought that was too much. So, i talked to for 2 hours and he lowered the price to $200,just for me. Is that too much?
now i dunno what to do with that rear!!!i know it will fit, but it is has rusted rotors, but very functional.
Please can anybody help?I know there is a tech article in the thirdgen.org. Do I need to keep the driveshaft or get another one? Please help me...Please I am new to rear axles and gears.

Enough with the pleases..... lol
For future reference, do a search on this as I think that all I do in life is respond to fourth gen rear swap questions now......
No, the third gen driveshaft will work.
If the rotors only have surface rust, it will come off during the first few miles of operation once installed - Otherwise have them turned. If they are out of specs for turning, than you are stuck and must buy new ones.
Your factory rims will fit for sure if they are 16". I doubt 15" third gen wheels will work but don't qoute me on that. The only issue is the offset. The rear axle from the fourth gen is 3 inches wider overall so the rims and tires will extend 1.5 inches farther out with the fourth gen rear axle versus the third gen axle. The offset issue will be present only if you use factory third gen wheels. If you buy aftermarket wheels, get fourth gen offsets for all four of them and get some spacers for the front from www.skulte.com so the wheels will fit correctly. This is merely a cosmetic issue as the tires will not rub on the fenders with third gen wheels on a fourth gen rear axle as long as your rear suspension isn't smoked.
The gear ratio depends on what tranny and what option the car has. If it is a 6 speed, the rear could be a 3.23 or a 3.42. If it is an automatic it could be a 2.73 or a 3.23. Check the RPO codes for further info and consult the dealer or a fourth gen website for info on those codes.
$200 is a pretty good deal if the brakes are good and the posi is in good condition. I paid $350 for my 3.42 geared 97 Z28 axle. You will like the bigger brakes and the taller gears (if they are taller than your current ones which I assume are or you wouldn't be looking for a new rear axle). You will need the fourth gen brake cables to get the e-brake to work in your car (do a search on this...). If you have four wheel disc already, you won't need a new proportioning valve. Otherwise an adjustable prop. valve or a complete new one for a four wheel disc setup will be needed.
Good Luck....

Matt87GTA your a life saver. Thanks for the reply. I am buyin the rear tommorow.9/27/01. I gots factory 15" rims.
I sincerely hope that it is a 3.23. I want no 2.73. because thats what I got in the 'bird. I dunno why in the world would
Chevy have a 2.73 posi on a Z28? I plans to install it this sat. and change the CV-joints on my mom's van.
