9 bolt carrier question
hey i have a borg warner 9 bolt with the 3.08 ratio, i called randy's ring and pinion and he told me 3.73's would run me bout 325 but i dont know which carrier its for the series 2 or the series 3, if its for the 3, is there a spacer made do adapt the series 3 gears to my series 2?

if you have a 9-bolt you don't have 3.08's. 3.08's are for a 10 bolt. You have either 2.77's 3.27's or 3.45's(only found in the 5 speed cars)

Apparently there ARE 3.08 9-bolts out there, but they are very rare. If you have one, its a 2-series, and you'll need a new posi unit to go with the 3.73 gears. Make sure those 3.73's are for 7.75" 9-bolts. Most 9-bolts use 3.70, but 3.73 is available too.

Randy's (as well as all the others) only have the weaker 10 tooth 3.70 ratio (even though they advertise it as a 3.73). I have up to 4.10 ratios (including an 11 tooth pinion 3.73) and series 3 posi carriers available.
With the 3.08 ratio, you will need a series 3 carrier to install a ratio numerically higher than 3.08.

Currently installing 3.73's into my 9 bolt (YES, it is a 9 bolt & YES they are 3.73's, not 3.70. I currently have 4.10 gear sets and new series 3 carriers in stock for 9 bolts

What ratio do you want? Anything numerically higher than a 3.08 will require either a series 3 carrier or a space (which is not recommended).

Miles, or anybody who knows.
Can you rundown a list of which stock gears fit on which series of carriers. Aftermarket ones would be fine too. I'm just wondering what I need to look out for
are the 3.27 and 3.45s for 3 series and the 2.77s for 2 series? I would imagine this is the case, but I just don't know
thanks

I have an 85 T/A. It had a non limited-slip 9 bolt with 3.08s in it. I now have a limited slip 9 bolt with 2.77s. The housings have the same numbers on them. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to have the 3.08 gears put in the limited slip rear end or possibly combine the gears to make a numberically higher ratio and keep the limited slip functionality. Thanks for your help.

Its my understanding all 9-bolts in f-bodies are posi and disc brakes. For you to have an open 9-bolt is strange. Are you sure its an open, or maybe its just a dead posi?
3.08 and numerically lower is a 2-series. 3.23 and numerically higher is a 3-series. All 2-series gears are interchangeable, and all 3-series gears are interchangeable, but you cant switch between 2 and 3 series.

Nope, it is drum brakes and open carier. I have had the cover off. I looked the number up in the hanes manual and it lists it as a borg warner open carier unit. I would like to at least get my gear ratio back up to my 3.08s. Does anyone know how much it would cost for a series 3 carrier. Can I use my gears out of my other rear end. If so does anyone know what ratios they would yeild. Just to refresh you they are 2.77 and 3.08 with the series 2 carrier.
Thanks

a while back someone said that they had made a 1/4" spacer so that you could use 3 series gears on a 2 series carrier. Id look for that post and talk to him. sorry I can't offer any more information
