Who really knows T-5's?
Will the S-10 T-5 tailshafts bolt onto the F-Body T-5's?
Will the S-10 tailshafts bolt on to the Mustang T-5's?
I guess the easiest question would be are all T-5 tailshafts interchangable?
I want to put a T-5 in my '59 Chevy, (S-10 tailshaft provides good shifter location). There seems to be an abundance of low milage t-5's around me from F-Body's and Mustangs, and I have a buddy who has a S-10 tailshaft from a '86/88 or '88 (mech speedo) S-10.
Anyway, if ya know, I'd appreciate some info, or maybe where to find the info.
Thanks

Quickly:
1. The ext housing will bolt on. I'm not sure about the length, i'e. whether you'd have to change the mainshaft too. Splines are the same.
2. Same as #1 except the splines and bushing diameters are different. But you might be able to put a F*rd driveshaft yoke on your driveshaft and make it work, I don't know about that.
3. The bolt pattern where they meet the case is the same. However, there are different splines and diameters for the mainshaft where the drive shaft plugs onto it, and different length shifter rails, and different trans mounts. So there's alot more to the picture than just the ext housing.
If a S-10 trans puts the shifter in teh right spot, why not just get a S-10 trans? Those are by far the most common T-5s in the boneyards, cheap and plentiful.

Thanks for the info RB, now I gotta start taking things apart to see if they matchup I guess
Well, I've been told (and maybe this is misinformation) that the V6 S-10 trannies have a much lower tq rating than the V8 T-5's.
That and no one around here seems to be parting a S-10, and the wrecking yards up here want 450-550 for a 13 year old transmission.
Like I mentioned though, I have a friend with a S-10 tailshaft and the paper always has a few 5speed F-body's being aprted out each month.
I could go with a F-Body T-5, but then I'd need to install bucket seats.
Thanks again for the info.

There's no difference as far as the internals among any of them. They use the same bearings, the shafts and gears are the same diameter, etc. Gear ratios are different, and external splines vary, but internally there's no difference in strength or durability among the various applications.
I don't know how much power your 59 has of course, but I would think that the truck clutch disc center splines ought to be adequate.
The last time I bought a S-10 T-5 for somebody, I paid $150 at a truck-only boneyard....

No kidding? Same torque ratings? That's good to know.
The '59 isn't a Powerhouse, so to speak. But do load it heavy, and do quite a bit of towing with it.
150, huh? Maybe I'll do some more calling around.
