The quest fot a 3.42 posi drum rear...

I need one.

Badly.

I can't find one anywhere; I'm not spending cash on a ring and pinion set, posi differential, etc. NO.

I can't get a disc rear, because that swap is like impossible times ten thousand in my 92 RS.

Where can I rip off a 3.42 posi drum? What cars did they come stock in, or didn't they?

I can scounge the junkyards for modded cars, I guess, but I figured I'd ask first.

I need this. Thanks

My 12/85 "86" Z28 came with posi 3:42's on drum. As far as I know it is the original rear end, so you might shoot for 85/86.

Current plans: Rebuild 305 with flat tops instead of the dished "cups" for pistons or slightly built 327 with the 58cc heads from the LG4, Upgrade the 2:73 to 3:73 or 3:42 and replace the turbo 350 with 700r4.

I think you can find 3.42 drums in V6 cars, the T5's.

My dad put an 89 9-bolt disc brake rear end in his 92 RS without any trouble. Whats the trouble with yours?

Go to the junkyard and grab a rear out of a 91-92 or so 3rd gen with a v6 and an auto. I never saw one that wasn't a 3.42, but check to be sure and check the axle splines to make sure it's a 28 spliner. Then get the SLP takeoff torsen posi and all you need is carrier bearing shims and marking compound and to check the backlash. If you can't score shims from the auto store I guess you could get the half install kit from jegs or summit.... I had some shims laying around. I noticed the stock shims arn't going to line up with the torsen, I guess it's production variation or something....

Total cost involved: $25 for the complete rear from a pull-it-yourself, $79 for the SLP takeoff (They were on sale, but I never saw them priced over $99)

It's a simple operation since you don't need to take out the pinion, I was done in less than and hour.

Check the tech data part of the site. It lists all the gearing for 3rd gen cars broken down by year (Even by stick vs auto). This would make it easy to find the desired gear ratio, and increase your chances of finding a rear without having to count the teeth...

Of course, you'll have NO idea whether the gears would have been changed or not so I guess you'll be counting the teeth anyways...

I have an original 3.73 rear from an 84 L69 car. Its has aluminum drums, no posi with about 58000 original miles. It needs a brake job, but is otherwise OK. $150 if your interested.I live in connecticut.
